Sam Gray of Boulder CO is settling into life in the Dominican Republic, where he is in the early stages of his commitment to the Peace Corps. He is assigned to an ecotourism project that is centered on a kayaking business that can be found at http://kayaklimon.wordpress.com.
Life in the Dominican Republic is much different than life in the United States, but Sam Gray of Boulder CO is adjusting well to his new surroundings. "I've always heard the saying ‘wherever you are, be all there,'" he says, "and that's what I am trying to do right now."
Sam Gray of Boulder CO arrived in the Dominican Republic in March 2014. His only regret so far is that he didn't bring a pair of basketball shoes. Back in the States, the March Madness of the NCAA basketball tournament was in full swing, but in the Dominican Republic, Sam Gray of Boulder spent some time painting new lines on a community basketball court, and then tested them out with in a game with some of the locals. Afterward, "he had a few blisters to show because he played basketball in his work boots," a friend reported.
Sam Gray of Boulder CO is staying with his host family in Laguna Limon, a small village in the northeastern part of the Dominican Republic. He has limited Internet access and only intermittent electricity, but there is running water. "Sam reports that the area is spectacularly beautiful, and his job now is to get the word out to people to come to the area." He is assigned to an ecotourism project that involves a kayaking ecotourism business (http://kayaklimon.wordpress.com). The project was started to provide a different source of income to the community, and to also educate the community and tourists about the lagoon and the surrounding areas.
